Prophecy fulfilled today

There are hundreds of prophecies in the Bible. The 15 prophetic books cover about 25% of the Word of God. There are also many prophecies of the book of Psalms. Elijah and Moses were important prophets. Abraham and the Lord Jesus were called prophets. A prophet speaks the words of God. His message comes direct from God in Heaven. He/she is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Over 3800 times we read in the Bible: ‘Thus speaks the LORD’ or similar words. The LORD God speaks, so we have to pay very close attention to the word of prophecy. There are eternal moral and ethical messages. The prophets have messages for their own times but also messages for the future. In our days many prophecies are being fulfilled. We can see Gods dealings with his people Israël and with the nations before our eyes. We can follow the daily news with the open Bible in our hands. During the days of our Lord Jesus on earth many prophecies have been fulfilled. But in our days maybe even more prophecies have been fulfilled or are about to be fulfilled! Now you may ask many questions:

  • What prophecies are being fulfilled?
  • Why most Christians do not see these fulfilments?
  • Do we live in the end of times?
  • What has the pending return of the Lord Jesus to do with this?
  • What is the role of Israël in these days and in the Word of God?
  • Why is the Word of prophecy so complicated?
  • Do we have a key that opens the door to the understanding of prophecy in our days?
  • What is the role and the place of the Church in these days of fulfilment?

Some striking prophecies

Let us just have a look at some interesting prophecies:

  • Remember the terrorist attack on the WTC Twin Towers in New York City on September 11 2001. Do we see a fulfilment of Isaiah 30:25 where the prophet speaks of ‘the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall’?
  • Let us look at the sealed rooms in Israël. As in 1991, when Sadam Hussein rained 39 Scud rockets on Israël, even now they prepared carefully sealed rooms against the biological and chemical weapons. In connection with those sealed rooms an article in the Jerusalem Post quoted Isaiah 26:21 and 21: ‘Come, my people, enter thou in thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hyde thyself as it were for a little moment untill the indignation be overpast’. At top of this you may remember the Hezbollah war. Thousands of missiles were fired on the North of Israël. Many Israëli’s hid in shelters.
  • We all know of the Jihad (Holy War) of the Islam against Israël. Has the prophet of Joël (Joël3:9,10) predicted this when he said: ‘Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare (Keep holy; sanctify) war, wake up the mighty men let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say I am strong.’
  • The Lord Jesus predicted wars, earthquakes, famines and sicknesses in a days before the endtime. Read Mathew 24:7 and Luke 21:11. He speaks of ‘fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven’. We did see ‘fearful sights from heaven’ when we saw the missiles flying in the sky above Bagdad and when we saw the Colombia spacecraft falling apart above the village of Palestine in Texas USA.
  • Will the Islam Jihad for Jerusalem and attempts of the Vatican to get foothold in the Holy City end up in the wars predicted by the prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 12:1-3 and 14)?

There are many more of these examples. But the question remains: Is it legimite explanation and interpretation of the Word of prophecy to apply all these prophecies on our times?

Most of the Christians find the Word of prophecy in the Bible hard to understand. One of the reasons is that it is not immediately clear what the prophet is talking about. The various messages of the prophets concern a wide range of subjects and speak of different periods in Gods dealings with Israël and with mankind.

Some examples:

  1. The prophets have messages for their own time: Jeremiah warns the people in Jerusalem to leave the city before the army of Nebukadnezar destroys that city. Isaiah has a special message for king Hezekiah during his sickness. Daniël has special messages for the kings of Babel and of the Medes and Persians. Ezechiël has many warnings for his contemporaries. The prophets Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi encourage the people of Israël in their days to rebuild the Temple. But these messages are very appropriate for these days also, since othodox Jews are very far with their preparations to rebuild the temple.
  2. Prophets have very important and universal social and ethical messages. Isaiah 58 explains that a good ‘church’ has a deep compassion with the poor and hungry and that we ‘should not hide from our own flesh’ (7). Jeremiah 22:4,13 exorts king of Judah that he should ‘execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place’ and not ‘use his neighbours service without wages’ This is quite a social program that Christian Churches should follow as one of the first priorities. Amos speaks many times and in strong terms about our responsibilities toward the poor and oppressed. Even king Nebukadnezar is admonished by Daniël who told him on behalf of the Most High God ‘to show mercy to the poor’(4:27).
  3. Repent!!! All prophets shout loud and clear: REPENT before the judgment comes. ‘Back to the LORD the God of Israël’ and ‘Back to His Word’, the Torah.
  4. The most important prophecies concern the 1st and the 2nd coming of the Lord Jesus Messiah. The gospel of Mathew has over 20 direct quotations from the prophets concerning Jesus. All He did was predicted by the prophets. He walked, so to say, from prophecy into prophecy.
  5. Endtime. Many prophets ‘saw’ events that will happen in the endtime. They saw flashes of terrible disasters that will happen in the near future. Endtime wars, such as in Ezechiël 38 and 39. The ‘end of the world’ as in Isaiah 14. all these prophecies are summarized by the apostle John in the book of Relevation, particularly in the chapters 6-19.
  6. The restoration of Israël. A very important theme of the prophetic word is the restoration of Israël. Many prophecies predict events relating to Israël and happening in our time.

The key to understand the word of prophecy in our days is following:

In the next chapters we will dwell in depth on these prophecies about Israël.

Het einde van de vervangingsleer

=== Een belangrijk boek ===
